Around Cambodia
Lots of people take planes to get from city to city in Cambodia because the roads are so bad, and it takes over 12 hours just to cover a few hundred km. But it was so cheap to take the buses that we couldn't pass it up- and I'm so glad we didnt fly because some of my favorite memories of this trip come from hittin' the road in Cambodia.
Like for instance, on our way from Angkor to Phnom Penh we stopped for a 'bathroom break' in front of these houses. There were no trees or ditches around, which wasn't a problem for the guys, but I ended up going behind these short bushes, in the front yard of this house!

During the rainy season this highway is normally flooded, which is why most typical Khmer houses are on stilts.

And on our lunch break in this town I was able to see the chaos of semi trucks and carts pulled by cows going by on the wonderful dirt highway. And one of the many amputees I saw while in Cambodia.

More highway pictures. The cows were everywhere. We even hit one! I know our mean driver saw it coming from far away, but be damned if he was going to stop! I think it was ok though. And later that day, a driver in front of us hit a little boy riding his bike along the highway. The driver just opened his door and yelled at the boy and kept driving, as did our bus driver. Again, I think he was ok.

And our bus broke down between Angkor and Phnom Penh. We sat at the side of the road for over 5 hours while our driver tore apart the entire engine. We sat with this 'fruit stand family', they were just hangin' in the fruit stand all day. I think we were their only customers.

But we quickly drew an audience. They liked to watch us.

And one guy came out with his pride and joy- his cock. Lots of the guys in Thailand and Cambodia spend a lot of time getting their birds ready for the big cock fight. (notice the onlookers in the background)

And more people were coming out of their houses to get a look at us.

On the road from Sihanoukville to Thailand, we had to take 5 ferries across rivers. It was a rough ride but scenic. Here's one of the ferry stops, with some fishing going on.

And here's where I had to go to the bathroom at the ferry crossing. It was a squatter toilet, raised about 6 feet above the river-you just go straight into the river!
